Harold S Feil in uniform, 1918
My grandfather, Harold S. Feil, MD (1889-1987), from Cleveland, Ohio, was serving as a medical officer in the US Army at Fort Dix, NJ, in 1918.
I remember him telling me that he cared for soldiers who were suffering from the Spanish Flu. Unfortunately, I don’t remember now whatever details he shared with me long ago, when I was in my late teens or twenties… But I know that this experience marked him throughout his medical career as a distinguished cardiologist and professor at Western Reserve University, who worked with and learned from Sir Thomas Lewis, MD, of Great Britain, and published an early study on digitalis as a heart medication. If my siblings and I find photographs or letters from his 1918 experiences treating Spanish Flu patients at Fort Dix, I will be sure to send copies.
