“She would make big pots of stew and would hand bowls of soup through the Cemetery gates to the workers.”
Philadelphia, PA

My Great Grandmother, Myrtle Kane Ambron , was born in 1901 and died in 1986. During the flu epidemic in Philadelphia she said there were coffins piled up to be buried, many of the grave diggers were sick themselves. They could not dig fast enough. She would make big pots of stew and would hand bowls of soup through the Cemetery gates to the workers. Our family also has letters from relatives in Texas, some of whom caught “la grippe” and survived, and one who died.
